For years, the idea of mixing business and religion has seemed a bit awkward, in one way or another. According to Scott Prater of The Colorado Springs Business Journal, “Christian Bros. Automotive, a Houston-based car-repair business, hopes to open two locations in the Colorado Springs area within the next year.”
Apparently, there is a growing trend among businesses nationwide, in which the advertising of business ethics via religion is being tested as a selling point of integrity and honesty.
While this may certainly be true, however, I retract with great reservation when I see the “fish-sign” or the “cross” being used as logo branding for the Christian business. Even though I’m a Christian, some of my negative experiences with the flashy Christian emphasis have been…well, let’s say…unpleasant.
As a Colorado Springs Realtor, I run a Christian-emphasized business. So what do I do differently? No logos. No Bible verse advertisements. No health/wealth blessings instead of outstanding service. My yes is a yes and my no is a no. My ideas about branding come from the inside of who I am in Christ so that I can provide realness of truth and life for the benefit of the community I serve.
In my opinion, the distinguishing feature between running a Christian business and a secular business involves faith. You must be a good business person, as well as a strong individual of faith to consider yourself as a good Christian business person. Being lukewarm in either context is disastrous for the Christian business model.
In conclusion, I just want to say this. If you do use flashier images about your religious beliefs, I am not automatically opposed to what you’re doing. This blog is not intended to bash your business if you differ from my approach. My position boils down to the root meanings of faith-based service and integrity in the business construct.
What’s your opinion? Is it okay to advertise as a Christian business like our tattoo artist did in the picture?
