Colorado Springs Realtor - Cherise's Blog: Running a Christian Business

Running a Christian Business

For years, the idea of mixing business and religion has seemed a bit awkward, in one way or another. According to Scott Prater of The Colorado Springs Business Journal, “Christian Bros. Automotive, a Houston-based car-repair business, hopes to open two locations in the Colorado Springs area within the next year.”

Apparently, there is a growing trend among businesses nationwide, in which the advertising of business ethics via religion is being tested as a selling point of integrity and honesty.

While this may certainly be true, however, I retract with great reservation when I see the “fish-sign” or the “cross” being used as logo branding for the Christian business. Even though I’m a Christian, some of my negative experiences with the flashy Christian emphasis have been…well, let’s say…unpleasant.

As a Colorado Springs Realtor, I run a Christian-emphasized business. So what do I do differently? No logos. No Bible verse advertisements. No health/wealth blessings instead of outstanding service. My yes is a yes and my no is a no. My ideas about branding come from the inside of who I am in Christ so that I can provide realness of truth and life for the benefit of the community I serve.

In my opinion, the distinguishing feature between running a Christian business and a secular business involves faith. You must be a good business person, as well as a strong individual of faith to consider yourself as a good Christian business person. Being lukewarm in either context is disastrous for the Christian business model.

In conclusion, I just want to say this. If you do use flashier images about your religious beliefs, I am not automatically opposed to what you’re doing. This blog is not intended to bash your business if you differ from my approach. My position boils down to the root meanings of faith-based service and integrity in the business construct.

What’s your opinion? Is it okay to advertise as a Christian business like our tattoo artist did in the picture?

I don't quite know what to say about the picture! As for the Christian symbols displayed, I agree. Actions speak louder.

I grew up the daughter of a Lutheran Pastor. I go to church and raise my family with Lutheran values. I am turned off however by businesses that heavily advertise their Christian beliefs.

To me it seems disingenuous to exploit Christ for business... Unless you are a Church. I understand there are people out there that would strongly disagree, but I am just talking about how I feel when I see companies advertising religiously for business.

Thanks for your views Team Honeycutt.  Actions do speaker louder than symbols.  Cherise

Ingrid, I appreciate your opinion.  To me, exploitation steps outside integrity.  Cherise

Christian Brothers is an excellent business.  They have several locations right here in The Woodlands.  Bold and beautiful post Cherise.  You will wear many jewels in your crown someday!  :)

Charles - I'm a bit confused.  Was the print size and font off on your computer?  Cherise

Paula - Since you recommend Christian Bros., then this will be great for Colorado Springs.  Bigger point though, how did your appointment go today?  Cherise

Cherise,

When it comes to business, I like others tend to prefer actions, ethics, behavior and conduct over gratitutiously using faith symbols or words. I, like you, have had bad experiences with persons who have so boldly proclaimed the banner, "Christian business." Thanks for sharing your views. They are always appreciated.

Cal - it doesn't seem like God ever yells His gospel message.  There is enough power with His silent whisper to arouse the angels of heaven.  Cherise

Hi Cherise ~ I find the trend disturbing and offputting. I've never associated religious beliefs with strength of character - in fact I've only in recent years become aware that some people do make that leap.

Cherise....thanks for sharing your beliefs, and the truth regarding walking by faith in your business. Could you imagine the mess if the tattoo artist misspelled something.

In my exerience, the louder someone proclaims that they are CHristian the less they actually practice it, and the ones who really LIVE it don't have to proclaim it.

... @Leslie I believe that too !

Cherise - good acknowledgement and I share your view. I see many who stand behind their religious banner for exploitation as opposed to sincerely for their views and way of life.

... very eye-catching picture though I must say !!!!!

PS: Did you see my reply on my blog about your spotlight !

Cherise - I think Charles put on his glasses to read the tattoo! I'm pretty sure that young lady doesn't understand the difference between love and lust. I also do not trumpet my beliefs, but everything I do is based on the teachings of Christ.

Tagrid - I appreciate your point of view.  Seemingly, you've been burned by those who fall short of their professed beliefs.  Understandably.  Cherise
